Exciting news out of Bertelsmann Investments’ healthcare fund: our portfolio company Phare Health has been acquired by R1 RCM, the US market leader in revenue cycle management.   As part of our investment thesis focusing on early-stage health tech ventures at the intersection of AI, RCM, and payments, Phare Health was one of our first healthcare investments. Throughout our joint journey, we were excited to see how rapidly the stellar team (ex-Google DeepMind) has scaled Phare into the leading AI platform for automating inpatient coding and pre-bill clinical documentation improvement.   Congrats to the truly exceptional founder team (Lee Kupferman, Martin Seneviratne, Tymor Hamamsy), our co-investors (e.g., General Catalyst, Alexandre Momeni, Chris Bischoff, Meridian Health Ventures), and our very own Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments team around Thorsten Wirkes and Tim Schneider – what a great achievement.   This exit is also a testament to the strong footprint that Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA has built in US healthcare across divisions, including successful growth platforms like Relias.

What started as isolated clinic rollouts is now evolving into something more structured, tech-enabled, and patient-centric. The expert noted the inherent advantages that legacy EHR (Electronic Health Record) companies have as the gate keeper of features. As shown by Epic's (private) recent announcement to develop an internal AI scribe solution, EHR vendors are in a position to limit third-party integration for features such as order mapping, pre-charting or clinical decision support. He noted an increased focus on AI by Oracle Cerner (ORCL, covered by Keith Weiss) post the merger.
