Your DTC brand is profitable. Meta ads work. Email works. Retention is strong. Then you launch on Amazon… and margins disappear. Here’s why. • Different cost structure: On Amazon, you pay FBA fees (Amazon’s cost to store, pack, and ship your product) plus a referral fee (their commission, usually ~15%). That’s before ads. Many DTC brands never rebuild their unit economics for this. • Pay-to-rank system: On your site, you drive traffic. On Amazon, you pay for visibility through PPC (pay-per-click ads). If you don’t spend on ads, you don’t rank. If you overspend, your ACOS (ad spend divided by revenue) kills your margin. • No owned audience: You don’t get customer emails. You can’t retarget like you do on Meta. Every sale often requires paid traffic again. • Price transparency: Your product sits next to 20 similar options. If your price is higher, you need stronger reviews and conversion — or you lose the Buy Box (the default “Add to Cart” spot).
