Your MFA might already be obsolete. For years the message was simple: “Turn on MFA and you’re safe.” Regulators just quietly moved the goalposts. Financial regulators, PCI DSS 4.0, NIST, FFIEC, NCUA and FINRA are now aligned on a new reality: Having MFA is no longer enough. It must be phishing-resistant MFA with full coverage and proof. Why this matters: Attackers stopped hacking systems. They log in. Passwords + push notifications + SMS codes are now prime phishing targets. The biggest risk is still stolen credentials. Regulators now expect organizations to prove: • MFA covers everyone including third parties and legacy systems • Exceptions are rare, documented, and temporary • Evidence is continuous, not once a year • High-risk access uses phishing-resistant methods Translation to business language: “We have MFA” is no longer a defensible answer. This is quickly becoming an audit, cyber insurance, and breach liability issue. The uncomfortable truth: Most companies still have gaps they cannot see.
