🔎 Understanding NAT – How Private Networks Access the Internet Private IP addresses used inside local networks cannot be routed on the public internet. Network Address Translation (NAT) solves this by translating private IP addresses into public IP addresses when traffic leaves the network. When an internal host sends traffic to the internet, the router or firewall replaces the private source IP with a public IP and records the translation in a NAT table. This allows return traffic to be mapped back to the correct internal device.
