Primary care deserves a smarter payment portfolio. Although primary care is the backbone of our healthcare system, our payment structures too often work against it. In my latest Fast Company piece, I argue that it’s time to embrace a more diverse portfolio of revenue models that reward relationships, prevention, and outcomes. This isn’t about adding complexity for its own sake. This is how independent primary care can find a way to achieve financial success in a system that wasn't build for them. Diversifying revenue streams aligns incentives with what great primary care already does: proactive, team-based, whole-person care. When we pay for what truly matters, clinicians get time back to focus on patients, health improves, and total costs come down. 📍 Start with low-burden models that reduce administrative noise and build muscle for transformation. 📍 Layer in population-based payments where practices have the tools and partnerships to manage risk responsibly. 📍 Measure what matters to patients and clinicians—not just what’s easy to count. If we get this right, we can make primary care the most innovative, rewarding, and impactful place to practice medicine.
