Quiet doesn’t mean small, it means focused. Surgical Automations, the Dallas-based stealth-mode startup redefining #GIsurgery, just closed an oversubscribed $3.4M seed round, announced Oct 30, 2025. Founded in 2023 by Dr. Sanket Chauhan, MD, MBA, this team isn’t tinkering with tech, they’re teaching machines to navigate the #humanbody with the precision of a top-tier #surgeon and the calm of an AI that never blinks. This round was co-led by Dr. Frederic Moll, the man behind the da Vinci Surgical System, and Turbostart, the Bengaluru VC founded by Ganesh Raju that’s quietly bridging deep-tech founders with global capital before “cross-border” became a buzzword. When the father of #surgicalrobotics and a VC with 52 startups back you, that’s not luck, it’s legacy aligning with ambition. Dr. Chauhan saw the problem up close: #colonoscopy and #endoscopy remain inconsistent and underserved despite being frontline defenses against #colorectalcancer, the 2nd leading cause of #cancerdeaths worldwide. During the pandemic, he began building an autonomous system to automate the hardest parts of these procedures. With an M.D., an MBA from SMU, and two surgical simulation fellowships, including one with the Dept. of Defense, he turned insight into invention. Beside him: Co-Founder & COO Ritambhara Chauhan, an attorney with an LL.M. from University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, bridging law, IP, and ops; Co-Founder Jason Blackstone, patent attorney; and Founding Engineer Bharadwaj Chukkala, a robotics mind from the University of Maryland. Their creation, the Vāsuki Robotic System, named after Hindu mythology’s divine serpent, was built to maneuver the GI tract with fluid precision. Powered by AI-based Automated Robotic Endoluminal Navigation (AREN), Vāsuki merges robotics, #sensing, and #deeplearning models like FasterRCNN, ResNet, U-Net, and PolypNet. It automates the tedious, error-prone parts of endoscopy while keeping #physicians in control. Less fatigue. More consistency. Fewer lives lost to preventable diagnostic misses. With the GI endoscopy market worth $12.06B in 2024 and projected to hit $18.79B by 2032 (5.8% CAGR), Surgical Automations is chasing both impact & opportunity. Ahead of last week's India AI Impact Summit, one of the largest conferences, Vinod Khosla, respected VC and co-founder of Sun Microsystems, sparked a debate with his prediction that IT and BPO services will disappear in the next five years due to AI. The Indian IT services industry has already seen a $50 billion market capitalization loss in 2025 due to growth uncertainties. Recent AI plugin launches with prospects of automation raise questions about the necessity of traditional IT services, as Agentic workflows begin to replace conventional IT systems. Phil Fersht elaborated on this topic, referencing a blog by Vijay Vijayasankar, emphasizing that the transition will not be straightforward due to procurement inertia, buying behavior, and the continued need for human involvement. Moreover, it will be an evolution just like for all other industries, rather than a collapse. Phil says: Vinod is correct about the velocity of change, while Vijay highlights the constraints that exist. It is clear that IT and BPO companies must adapt to capture budgets shifting toward Agentic applications rather than relying on SaaS or traditional app development. While I agree with all above, I would like to add that securing AI budgets is not straightforward. A notable trend is that enterprises are increasingly inclined to conduct AI development in-house, driven by employee enthusiasm for building AI skills. AI app-dev is not mundane work to outsource, it is becoming a core and critical competency to develop inhouse. This shift towards in-house development means less reliance on outsourcing. Additionally, traditional IT and BPO service companies need to adjust their expectations regarding profit margins, as maintaining high profits of 20+ percentage is no longer feasible. One former CEO of an IT services giant reiterated that profit margins is the first priority of the IT services companies. This is a critical time for research and development, skill-building, and competitive sales and they become often a victim to aggressive expectations in profits.
