“There is an archetype that the entrepreneurial world has when they think about what success looks like in start-ups,” Abbs told Yahoo Finance. “Women, we don’t see ourselves as part of that archetype, we don’t feel as invited into that space.”

  • The Startup World Needs More Women Led Unicorns

    eMerge Americas

Unicorns: they exist. In the startup world, at least.

Unicorns are privately held companies valued over $1 billion. The name alludes to the statistical rarity of such successful ventures: in 2017, CB Insights tallied the odds of becoming a unicorn at less than 1 percent.

Even more rare: finding women at the helm of these billion dollar companies. That’s the problem the startup world needs to fix, said Michelle Abbs, director of the Miami Women Innovating Now (WIN) Lab®, a venture…

“We are leaving billions of dollars on the table by not having half of the population involved in the entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Abbs. “It’s not a feminist problem. It’s a problem we all have to solve.”

“Being named an emerging leader in a city I’ve only lived in for 12 years gives me a sense of belonging and commitment that’s truly profound,” said Abbs, 35, director of Miami WIN Lab for Babson College. “I’m honored that the Center for Leadership is encouraging even more female leadership by lifting me up as a role model.”

The Emerging Leader Award honors South Florida’s successful, next-generation leaders under the age of 40. Abbs was chosen from among nine finalists.
