Dear SDR Managers, higher volume doesn’t fix pipeline. Sorry to break it to you, but making your SDRs burn through hundreds of calls a day won’t magically fix anything. I know because as an SDR Manager I’ve been there. If your team doesn’t have the right tools or training, pushing hire volume might get a few extra meetings, but at the cost of burning out your SDRs in the long run. You want more conversations, not more calls. More conversations means better data. Calling 600 leads a day when close to half of those numbers aren’t the right people is an incredible waste of your SDRs time. I use FullEnrich to make sure I get the right data (and because I’m not tech savvy and it’s extremely easy to enrich leads straight from LinkedIn). Call volume means nothing if you're calling the wrong numbers. More conversations is the goal, not more calls. I will die on this hill.

SDR Manager: Week 1: “We’ll review calls next week.” Week 2: “We’re too busy closing the month.” Week 3: “We’ll catch up after QBR.” Week 4: “Performance dropped, what happened?” Every SDR manager knows this cycle. The irony? The thing that feels easiest to postpone is the thing that would’ve prevented the drop. Coaching doesn’t need to be fancy, it just needs to be consistent. Inspect one skill per week. Debrief one call per rep. Document one action. That’s the rhythm that compounds. You can’t scale performance in chaos. You scale it through cadence.

Staying mentally strong as an SDR isn’t optional. It’s the job. You can always do more. More calls. More reps. More follow ups. More focus on what actually moves pipeline. The gap between average and elite isn’t talent. It’s standards. Average SDRs do enough. Elite SDRs do what’s required, and then some. They push past: • Rejection • Silence • Missed targets • Long days Because they understand… Pressure isn’t the problem. Comfort is. This role will test your discipline, your consistency, and your mindset daily. That’s the point. Uplevel every day. Personally and professionally. Refine your process. Execute with intent. HOT TAKE: Most SDR cold call advice is wrong. Some “gurus” say a cold call should be under 4 or 5 minutes. Get in. Pitch. Book the meeting. Get out. Sounds great on LinkedIn. But over the last year, some of my best cold calls have gone 10 to 15 minutes and those are the ones that turned into real opportunities and ideally… closed won. Why? Because the prospect was talking. And when people talk, you learn things. You hear the pain. You hear the frustration. You hear what they’ve tried. You hear how they buy. You hear who else is involved. You hear the truth. That is called discovery. So no, I don’t agree that every cold call needs to be rushed just to fit some made-up best practice. Yes, sometimes a quick call is perfect. But if someone is engaged, opening up, and clearly interested, why would I cut that short just so I can say “Yep booked that one in 4 minutes.” That’s not efficiency. That’s leaving value on the table. My take? A cold call should not be judged by how fast you book the meeting. It should be judged by the quality of the conversation and whether it actually turns into pipeline. So to anyone preaching 4 minute or 5 minute cold calls only let’s talk. Show me your data. Most SDR teams are trained to cold call strangers. That’s the problem. Good SDRs know how to cold call. But the best ones understand marketing. They know how to write a message someone might actually respond to. They understand how LinkedIn distribution works. They know how to communicate without sounding like a script. Because familiarity changes everything. If a prospect has seen your name a few times that week, a call feels very different. You’re not interrupting a stranger. You’re continuing something they’ve already seen. And suddenly the conversation lasts 10 minutes instead of 30 seconds. The real job of prospecting is to have a conversation, understand if there’s a problem and see if they’re motivated to fix it. Outbound gets a lot easier when you’re not a stranger.

The real SDR skill no one trains... Disqualifying. Most SDR training is about: • objection handling • persistence • follow-up cadence • activity levels Very little is about the skill that actually protects pipeline quality: Knowing who NOT to book. Great SDRs understand something early in their career that most teams never formalize: Every bad meeting you book: • wastes an AE’s time • hurts conversion rates • distorts the forecast • and slowly destroys trust between SDR and Sales But the system rarely rewards disqualification. In many teams, saying “this isn’t a fit” feels like failure. So SDRs book anyway... That’s where pipeline quality dies. The best SDRs don’t book more meetings. They filter harder. And they walk away fast when it’s not there. Because protecting the calendar is more valuable than filling it. Disqualification isn’t negative. It’s a revenue skill. And almost no one trains it.

I stayed in SDR longer than I wanted. Turns out, it was the best thing for my career. I used to think SDR was just a step. Book meetings. Get promoted. Move on. So I focused on numbers: → Hit quota → Logged activity → Tried to look “ready” on paper But it wasn’t enough. Until someone told me: “If you don’t master SDR, AE will expose you.” They were right. I started treating SDR like it was the job, not the wait.  • Refined my messaging  • Practiced objections daily  • Treated every call like a rep  • Studied ICPs, pain points, and personas And I learned how to sell. Not just book. Not just qualify. Sell. So when I got promoted? I wasn’t guessing. I was ready. → Month 1 as AE: I booked 15 meetings → Month 2: I booked 12 more → Month 3: Hit 575% of my quota (ramp 66% of target) and closed a 154k ARR 1 year commitment deal Because the habits I built as an SDR didn’t disappear, they scaled.
