You just onboarded your 200th Direct Indexing account. Each client has different tax rates, different harvesting thresholds, different restrictions. We're seeing some CFPs, who are also enrolled agents, do something really smart: 1) buy tax practice 2) convert a % into AUM and continue doing their taxes 3) sell / graduate / increase fees to attrit the unprofitable tax-only clients Here's how I would engineer it if we started today. 1. Build Your CPA/EA Prospect List • Use LinkedIn Sales Navigator to find enrolled agents, small-firm CPAs and tax pros who serve your AUM bands. • Filter by firm size, revenue bands, and geography. Export names who are active on Linkedin (this is a Sales Nav filter). 2. Outbound • Send connection requests (“Hi Andrew, saw you specialize in 1040/1120 prep. Wondering how you’re advising clients on the new tax credits this year?”). • Follow up with value-first touchpoints: a 30-second video insight or a one-pager on integrated tax & advisory. • Track opens, replies and bookings in your CRM. Or a spreadsheet. We're not talking high volume here. No need to overcomplicate. 3. Linkedin Profile & Content Reinforcement • Optimize your LinkedIn profile headline (“CPA Partnerships → Tax Returns → Fiduciary Advisory”). • Publish one short-form video per week. Sample topic: “Why CPAs and RIAs thrive when they collaborate on behalf of a shared client.” • Ghostwrite 2–3 posts per month that share case studies. Show proof this works well for the right clients. 4. Sequential Nurture Sequence • Touch 1: Connection request + micro-survey (“What’s your biggest compliance headache this year?”) • Touch 2: Content drop. Link to your video or other educational content. • Touch 3: Direct invite to a “Tax-to-Advisory Strategy Call.” 5. Conversion & Handoff • Once a CPA or EA books a call, map their firm’s client roster into your CRM. • Your advisor team runs joint discovery calls: “Let’s identify 10% of your tax clients who could benefit from portfolio management.” • Close them into advisory mandates. Feed that AUM back into your service engine. 6. Gradual Tax-Client Graduation • Over 12–24 months, increase fees or sunset pure tax-prep work for clients who haven’t moved into advisory. • Maintain profitability by retaining only the high-intent, high-AUM segment.
