In honor of Black History Month, each weekday we will be featuring an #HBCU and highlighting its top undergraduate academic programs. Today we feature the Mathematics Program at Tuskegee University in Alabama. As one would expect at a school founded by Booker R. Washington (who combined genius, pragmatism and educational vision in ways matched only by such towering figures as Benjamin Franklin and John Dewey), the math curriculum at Tuskegee is designed to foster competency and growth for students in practical fields like engineering, architecture, and business. Its goal is simple: provide students with essential mathematical tools for professional excellence in high-demand professions. At the same time, the program is as rigorous as ay undergrad math program in the nation, allowing students gain in-depth knowledge in advanced areas including linear and abstract algebra, differential equations, probability and statistics, and real and complex analysis. This allows Tuskegee graduates to explore a wide range of vocational paths, including graduate studies in Math or Computer Science, or careers in government, industry, and teaching. This is achieved through a student-centered pedagogy through initiatives like the Active Learning Mathematics Research Action Cluster (ALM-RAC), focusing on higher-level thinking, reasoning, and mathematical communication rather than passive listening. All of this is made possible by a faculty dedicated to an environment of "rigor, challenge and interaction.” Professors at Tuskegee are, first and foremost, teachers, dedicated to the task of producing a new generation of STEM majors who have the practical math skills to contribute vitally to fields engineering, mathematics, computer science and education. The ZFSOE recently welcomed future school leaders to campus for professional learning and leadership development. Aspiring school leaders in Charleston County School District’s LIFT Cohort participated in professional development at The Citadel focused on strengthening skills for effective school administration. Dr. Harrison and Dr. Duplantis led sessions on PADEPP Standards, strategic time management, and instructional leadership.
