This is a great macro update from a16z on blockchain activity. In particular, note the rise of stablecoins as a lower-cost alternative to traditional payment rails. I’m also excited about the tokenization of assets like real estate, which could make these investment classes more liquid and accessible to a wider range of investors. While I’ve participated in crypto, it’s always felt more speculative and I still rarely transact in Bitcoin. But as a technology platform, blockchain itself holds enormous potential that has yet to be fully realized. https://lnkd.in/ghaXFA9B

Taquito v24.2.0 released. Over the past week, changes to the Tezos Beacon relay node infrastructure left roughly a third of wallet users unable to connect to dApps. The Beacon SDK would try to reconnect to a decommissioned server, an internal promise would never resolve, and every subsequent call would hang permanently. The only workaround was manually clearing browser site data. We shipped a fix. Dead relay servers now fail fast with a 10-second timeout. Stale cached nodes get cleared automatically and the SDK discovers a working server. Connections route to known-good infrastructure. The bug was in the Beacon SDK (and Octez.connect), not in Taquito, but the impact on Taquito users was immediate and we weren't willing to wait. We published a patched fork and the fixes are available to the Beacon and Octez.connect teams upstream. This release also re-exports Beacon SDK types directly from @taquito/beacon-wallet, so developers can remove @airgap/beacon-* from their dependencies and import everything from Taquito. Federal prosecutors may have just handed Samourai Wallet the key to its own defense. I have followed digital privacy tools for years, and this new twist in the Southern District of New York grabbed my full attention. Samourai is a Bitcoin wallet that offers a mixing feature, making it harder to trace transactions on the blockchain. In April 2024, the United States charged co-founders Keonne Rodriguez and William Hill with conspiring to launder money and run an unlicensed money-transmitting business. The government’s story rested on the claim that a wallet with a mixing tool is the same as a money service like Western Union. Samourai’s lawyers asked for any record that could show otherwise, citing the Supreme Court’s Brady rule that forces prosecutors to hand over helpful evidence. They finally received a memo sent back in August 2023 from FinCEN, the Treasury unit that writes the rules for money transmitters. FinCEN told the same prosecutors that Samourai did not meet the legal test for a money-transmitting business and did not need a license. Despite that clear opinion, the indictment went forward and the memo stayed buried until April 1, 2025. Keeping exculpatory evidence under wraps violates due process, and similar missteps have sunk other high-profile cases. Samourai’s legal team now wants a hearing to decide whether the entire case should be dismissed, arguing that the hidden memo harmed bail, strategy, and public perception. They add that even if the Department of Justice clings to its own reading of the law, defendants never got fair notice because the official regulator held the opposite view. The stakes go beyond 2 entrepreneurs. If the court throws out these charges, it could limit how aggressively the government pursues open-source privacy tools that do not actually take custody of client funds. This matter also shows how fast crypto law is evolving, with different agencies sometimes talking past each other. Clear guidelines from regulators would spare innovators, investors, and yes, prosecutors from costly detours. I will keep tracking this story as next steps unfold on July 22, 2025.
