Two Boston tech leaders this week told me: “We don’t and will never use staffing agencies.” I shared my thoughts, they politely ended the call… then both called back to set up coffee meetings for next week. Why the initial resistance? Staffing agencies sometimes get a bad rap. I get it misaligned candidates, transactional approaches, or past bad experiences can leave a sour taste. But when done right, recruiting isn’t about resumes. It’s about partnership, timing, deep market knowledge, and really understanding the nuance of a team’s hiring needs. Sometimes that takes a minute to digest. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴? 🏀 | 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 For years I have watched job seekers just look at job boards -- it's time to get back to looking at the person in the seat next to you. As March Madness kicks off, there is a high-impact lesson for every professional: The most successful "matchups" aren't found in on a screen. They happen on the sidelines and in the stands. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: A huge percentage of leadership roles are filled through the "𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁"—the network of genuine relationships and serendipitous conversations that happen "off-the-clock." 🏟️ What I know for sure is that in today’s job market you must maximize every networking opportunity you have. Don't just watch the game—engage. In the job search, it’s rarely the "seeding" that matters; it’s the strength of your connections that creates the biggest upsets.  Good luck with your brackets and your search🏆

There’s a “good” and a “bad” way to figure out if you need to fire a client. FWIW, this checklist applies to many other industries, not just mine. Here’s the quick 3-part test I personally use (for our VA staffing agency), because these are hard situations. A set of qualifying questions helps. 1. Are they treating their VA poorly? I’ll ask the VA to send me some screenshots of prime incidents, or maybe a call recording. I’ve witnessed VAs being cussed out, screamed at, talked down to. When I hear that, done. I just end the relationship there. 2. Is the client constantly “disappointed” no matter what they get? This is harder to diagnose, but I also have a 2-3 step qualifying process. - First, I swap out the VA. - If that doesn’t work, I bring on a 3rd person. Someone with a proven track record. If the complaints continue even with our very best, it’s not the VA. Which leads to the last qualifier… 3. I reassure about quality + scope between VA swaps, and realign on contract terms. I’ll personally check-in with the client, reassuring that we’re finding a substitute who crushed it with their last client. I’ll even send past client testimonials, if needed. After that, I’m pretty okay with the outcome that, “hey, we really tried…but we can’t keep pairing VAs with you.” A good VA deserves a good client. End story.
