Happy Wednesday all! The wealth management industry is heating up this February with a mix of massive consolidation and regulatory evolution. From Nuveen’s blockbuster acquisition to FINRA’s push to align broker-dealer marketing with RIA standards, the lines between channels continue to blur. Here are the five most critical headlines from the past week: 1. Nuveen to Acquire Schroders in $13.5 Billion Mega-Deal Nuveen has agreed to acquire UK-based Schroders in a $13.5 billion all-cash transaction, creating a global asset management giant with nearly $2.5 trillion in AUM. This cross-border deal highlights the intensifying race for scale among active asset managers as they seek to compete with passive giants and expand their private market capabilities. FINRA Proposes Rule Change to Allow Performance Projections FINRA has filed a proposal to amend Rule 2210, potentially allowing broker-dealers to use performance projections and targeted returns in communications with investors. An AI RIA is now targeting 80–90% of U.S. households. Era recently registered with the SEC as an AI-powered financial advisor built for individuals with less than $500k in investable assets. I asked Perplexity how many Americans fall into that category. Their response: “Using the best national data and industry surveys, a strong majority of U.S. households have $500,000 or less in investable assets — very roughly on the order of 80–90% depending on how you define it.” So in theory, an AI advisor is now targeting the vast majority of the U.S. population. Take a second and imagine if that was your target market.. How would you reach them?  What would your messaging be? What channels would you use? What would you offer? How would you support that many? If you're going to hire for support, how do you find them? Onboard? Train? Before you even finish thinking about your answers, this thing could have built and deployed a campaign complete with marketing material, ads, products, infrastructure, etc. If you're an Advisor, Era itself may not feel like a direct threat because I’m sure many of those households may not fall within your ideal client profile. But it is a very clear signal of where things are headed… or more accurately, where things already are. Technology is rapidly expanding access to financial advice (for better or for worse) — especially for people who historically haven’t worked with an advisor. Your job is not to compete with tools like this. Instead, it’s to leverage AI to create more capacity for what clients actually value: - better conversations - deeper trust - being their ‘therapist’, in a sense Now is the time to lean into where your value truly lives — the human element. Some questions worth thinking about: - Which parts of your process could AI improve, accelerate, or eliminate? - Are you spending time on tasks that clients don’t actually value? - How much more present could you be with clients if operational work was reduced? - What does your role look like in 5 years if AI handles the technical heavy lifting? - What parts of your service model are most defensible in an AI-enabled world? - If AI lowers the cost of advice, how does your value proposition need to evolve?
