“Gimme” putts — when players concede short putts without requiring them to be holed — are a common part of casual golf, especially to speed up play. However, they can be problematic for several reasons, especially in competitive or skill-building contexts: 1. Erodes the Skill of Putting Under Pressure • Putting is mental as much as physical. The pressure of holing short putts is a crucial part of the game. Gimme putts remove that pressure, so players never develop confidence or resilience in those key moments. 2. Inaccurate Scoring • Gimme putts lead to inconsistent and often inflated scoring accuracy. Players may record a made putt they never attempted — and might not have made. Over time, this distorts handicaps and undermines the integrity of scorekeeping. 3. Unfair Advantage • In casual games with loose rules on gimmes, some players may be more generous than others. This inconsistency can give unfair advantages in friendly wagers or group competitions. 4. Hinders Improvement • Short putts — even inside 3 feet — are missed more often than many amateurs think. Not holing them regularly means missing out on valuable practice and feedback. 5. Against the Spirit of Golf Rules • In stroke play (as opposed to match play), gimmes are not allowed under the Rules of Golf. Using them in casual rounds creates habits that can cause rules violations in tournament settings. 6. Delays Tournament Readiness • A player used to gimmes may struggle in tournaments where every putt must be holed. My PGA Golf Shows was a whirlwind of meetings and growing new friends and partners for FlingGolf by New Swarm, but I also spent a fair amount of time in the Racquet Sports section, watching and playing #pickleball, #padel and a brand new sport, #typti. I’m a junkie for “new” sports and how they are growing, both the casual player community side, but also the business side. Understanding the process for each one is helping our strategy for #FlingGolf and our next steps for World League FlingGolf. I spoke with anyone around the courts from product side like Franklin Sports and Selkirk Sport - We Are Pickleball to the organized competition and league side like Racquet Sports Professionals Association and Pro Padel League. Intrigued by Typti which was just launched and is played on #pickleball courts. All of these stem from tennis, but did you know that “lawn tennis” was actually an innovation derived from an ancient game (mostly France and England) called “Real , Royal or Court Tennis” which is still being played today? Which of these newer racket sports has the right recipe for long term success? Right now, I’d put some money on Padel although it’s barrier may be the expense of building the infrastructure. Typti is kind of genius in that it is able to be played on the seeming millions of pickleball courts that have been built over the last decade. And it doesn’t make any sound! Why not use existing infrastructure , like #snowboarding did on ski slopes? I like that model. That takes down a huge barrier for adoption. (Pickleball took decades before it caught fire at least partly because it needed its own courts to be built.) Golf Quietly Just Posted One of the Strongest Participation Stories in U.S. Sports While much of the sports business conversation focuses on media rights and franchise valuations, participation data often tells the more durable story. The U.S. golf industry just reached an all time high with 48.1 million participants. That number includes both traditional on course golfers and the growing ecosystem of off course formats such as simulators and entertainment driven venues. What stands out: • 29M+ Americans played on course, marking eight straight years of growth • Female participation is up 46% • Operators report strong financial performance and record rounds played in 2025 This is not just a pandemic carryover effect. It looks structural. Golf has effectively expanded its funnel. Simulator leagues, tech enabled ranges, and social formats have reduced the intimidation factor and time commitment. At the same time, core facilities are benefiting from increased rounds and healthier economics. From an investment lens, this is what you want to see. 1. A sport expanding participation across demographics 2. A hybrid physical digital model that increases engagement 3. Strong facility level cash flow supported by consistent demand Golf is no longer just a country club narrative. It is becoming a multi format participation platform that touches entertainment, hospitality, equipment, media, and data.
