The University of Detroit Mercy College of Engineering & Science has been partnering with Riipen to bring authentic industry projects into some of our classes, providing real-world, open-ended experiences to our students that supplement their theoretical coursework while preparing them for their required co-ops and the careers that will follow. Thank you to Avishek Mukherjee, Ph.D., Caitlin Snyder, Mariam Faied, Mina Maleki, and Nassif Rayess for undertaking these partnerships in order to provide valuable learning experiences for our students.

U.S. Colleges are currently facing unprecedented challenges that lead to closures, affecting both students and communities. Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, recently held its final commencement ceremony in 2025, marking the end of over a century of service, primarily due to financial difficulties and declining enrollment. The narrative surrounding college closures often resonates with a quote from Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises: “Gradually and then suddenly.” While dramatic closures make headlines, the underlying issues—declining enrollment, rising operating costs, and poor endowment returns—have been developing over many years. We have recently seen the closure of several small nonprofit institutions, including Wells College in New York, Iowa Wesleyan University in Iowa, and Finlandia College in Michigan. This trend has been intensified by a significant reorganization within the for-profit college sector, which saw enrollment drop by more than half during the 2010s. Machine learning offers a potential solution to address data gaps and forecast the future of higher education, providing insights that could help navigate these turbulent times. https://lnkd.in/ghjpAf7x
