Ouch! Two competing FTTH networks in a town of only ~230 households. 🫣 This is now a recurring theme in the state of Maine. From Arrowsic to Vienna and everywhere in between. Every city, town, island, and township that was once served by FairPoint/Consolidated DSL has been converted or is being converted to fiber. These Telco overbuilds are a siren song for any ISP or Municipality that is planning to invest millions to serve the remaining unserved locations in Maine, which are few and far between. LG Uplus Hits 30M Subs as MVNO Growth Complements 5G Expansion LG유플러스 (LG Uplus) has officially surpassed 30 million total subscribers as of the end of 2025. This achievement was heavily supported by the continued momentum of the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (#MVNO) segment, which reached 9.005 million connections. This growth represents a 10.5% increase from the 8.147 million connections recorded in 2024, marking a remarkable seven-year streak of double-digit expansion for the MVNO division dating back to 2019. The steady climb in MVNO adoption has become a cornerstone of the company’s wireless strategy, contributing significantly to the overall 7.7% year-over-year increase in total wireless subscriptions. The sustained double digit growth of the MVNO segment has fundamentally reshaped LG Uplus's wireless business by providing a high-volume base that complements its high-value #5Gstrategy. While MVNOs are often associated with lower price points, their rapid expansion to over 9 million subscribers has acted as a critical volume engine, helping the company achieve its 30 million subscriber milestone while simultaneously allowing the MNO division to focus on "qualitative growth" through 5G migration. By maintaining a massive MVNO footprint, LG Uplus effectively captures a wider spectrum of the market, from budget-conscious consumers and the expanding IoT fleet to high-end 5G users. This dual-track approach has created a stabilizing effect on mobile service revenue, which grew 4.1% in 2025. The MVNO segment’s 10.5% growth ensures that the company maintains market share and network utilization even as the traditional MNO market reaches maturity. The volume growth has not cannibalized the premium segment, instead it has provided a floor for total service revenue while the MNO side successfully pushed its ARPU up by 1.8% through 5G upselling. In terms of profitability, the MVNO model offers a lower-cost acquisition route for new connections, which helps balance the higher marketing and capital expenditures required to maintain the 5G MNO infrastructure. This synergy was a key factor in the company’s ability to post an operating profit of 892.1 billion won (approximately $608.5 million). Excellent work by the engineering team at CableAML in developing a fully integrated standalone model featuring both a 5G Core and VoIP PBX. A similar system architecture has been successfully deployed in military applications, utilizing satellite connectivity for secure communications with headquarters.

This spectrum auction marks an important milestone for Pakistan’s digital future. I would like to appreciate the Government of Pakistan, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority for successfully concluding this process. A stable and transparent policy environment gives the telecom sector the confidence to continue investing in the country’s digital growth. For years, telecom disruption was all about the network. Who had better coverage. Who had more spectrum. Who could shout loudest about speed. That era is quietly ending. Today, differentiation has moved up the stack. Networks are still critical, but they are no longer enough on their own to win markets. Most customers now assume connectivity will just work. What they notice is everything wrapped around it. Onboarding that takes seconds, not days. Pricing that makes sense without reading the small print. Apps that feel consumer grade, not enterprise leftovers. APIs that let partners build quickly. Support that fixes problems before users complain. This is why platform led players are reshaping telecom. MVNOs, travel eSIM providers, CPaaS platforms and embedded connectivity players are not winning because they own networks. They are winning because they abstract them. They turn complex infrastructure into simple products. The network becomes a commodity input. The platform becomes the value. Incumbent operators often struggle here. They optimise brilliantly for network KPIs but under invest in product, experience and speed. Challengers flip that logic. They assume the network is table stakes and compete on how intelligently it is packaged and delivered. This shift is only accelerating. AI driven support. Context aware pricing. Real time personalisation. Developer first distribution. None of these are network problems. They are platform problems. The operators that win the next decade will still care deeply about networks, but they will obsess even more about what sits on top of them. Because in today’s market, people do not buy networks.
