In the military, planning is contingency-driven, structured, and designed to anticipate what could go wrong before it happens. Veterans are trained to think several steps ahead, build backup options, and prepare decision points in advance so they can adapt quickly under pressure. This structure is often mistaken for rigidity, when in reality it is a form of risk awareness and mission protection. In civilian organizations, planning is more assumption-driven and shaped by market conditions, timelines, and stakeholder alignment. Flexibility comes from iteration and responsiveness as new information emerges. When these two systems meet, the disconnect is not mindset but translation. Veterans are not inflexible, and civilians are not careless. They are solving different problems. 👀 Ever wonder why you might see different SkillBridge opportunities on 50strong compared to the official DoD SkillBridge site? Here’s why ⬇️ The DoD site is the official foundation of SkillBridge. Everyone should leverage it. 👉 It has always listed Authorized Organizations at the national level. 👉 Thanks to ongoing website improvements, *some* of the 3000+ Authorized Organizations list their opportunities on the SkillBridge website at CITY LEVEL. Not all do. At 50strong, we have always believed that digging deeper with strong employers - down to the CITY LEVEL - is key. Why? because that’s where service members actually live, transition and want to work. In 2022 (& after a year of excel-based prototyping), we built a tool to easily add these and publicly share. It's also FREE to any DoD-authorized organization. Because when you’re planning your post-military career, knowing where opportunities exist is just as important as knowing what they are.

🎯 The defense contracting landscape is shifting in major ways for 2026. With the FY 2026 NDAA now signed into law, we're seeing the most significant acquisition reforms in years. The changes are designed to make it easier for nontraditional contractors to work with DoD while maintaining security standards. Here's what's changing: ✅ TINA threshold raised from $2.5M to $10M (effective June 30, 2026) ✅ Streamlined requirements for commercial contractors ✅ Exemptions for nontraditional defense contractors from many cost accounting rules ✅ New focus on portfolio acquisition approach At the same time, CMMC Phase 1 implementation started November 2025, with Phase 2 mandatory third-party assessments beginning November 2026. This means contractors handling controlled unclassified information need to be working on compliance now, not later. What I'm seeing in the market: The barrier to entry is lowering for new entrants, but the cybersecurity bar is rising. This creates opportunities for companies that can demonstrate both agility and security maturity. Smart contractors are already preparing their systems, documentation, and workforce to meet these dual demands. For those supporting defense and energy programs, the next 12 months will be critical. Getting CMMC ready while positioning for the new acquisition environment requires intentional planning. My take: These reforms signal DoD's commitment to innovation and speed, but security can't be an afterthought.
