Intangible Heritage and Digital Narratives. Every museum collection contains layers of meaning that are not readily apparent. Each object encapsulates a network of symbolic, ritual, or social relationships that link it to other elements of its cultural context. However, this complexity is rarely made explicit in the exhibition halls. Museums, limited by physical space and visitor attention, tend to prioritize the material dimension of heritage, leaving its intangible dimension in the shadows. Dialogue-based art practices encourage new definitions of engagement; connectivity and the role artists play within contemporary culture. This curatorial practice explores the concept of neoliberalism as one of the dominant cultural narratives of the last forty years and how dialogue-based practices has helped reveal conflicting voices of those who have been excluded, marginalized and who are outside of this mainstream dominant discourse. Dialogue used within curatorial practices examine how cultural institutions operate, what they exhibit and how the rituals of cultural authority discourage the participation of communities. This practice utilizes collaboration and participation to co-create and decontextualized curatorial practice as a form of cultural inquiry that challenges conventions, unravels social and political structures and provokes viewers. At the same time, dialogical practices create possibilities to contest myths and challenge the perceptions that construe such institutions as monolithic and the opening of up of neo-liberal narratives to the critical form of creative inquiry art and the alternative points of views. These cultural practices have the potential to offer marginalized communities’ opportunities to explore community-based ways of knowing, reveal diverse ways of seeing the world and that embrace inclusion as well as individual and societal change. The process of incorporation of dialogue into artistic practices means developing collaborative models, making links to community, supporting local and regional art practices, and situating the direction of the local community engagement. Questions of dominant contemporary narratives and how diverse forms of cultural expression are built on multiple; conflicting voices can reveal important social truths and contradictions because they reject a single and dominant narrative. We need to develop new models for art galleries and museums to engage with everyone in our communities. The use of dialogue in cultural practices challenges the dominant narratives of neoliberalism and alternatively reveals the voices of those who have been excluded, marginalized, and who are outside of these dominant discourses. Dialogue-based artists explore collaboration within communities to co-create arts programming within specific social and/or cultural groups using collaboration and participation in the development of a new engagement between art galleries, museums and communities. Dialogical practice can help cultural institutions transform themselves into public spheres that allow disenfranchised voices to challenge dominant narratives and social structures, using creative forms of dialogue to instigate conscious change from below. The use of dialogue in artistic practices invites community participation and develops new opportunities for communities to become engaged with contemporary visual art and reinvent the progressive mandates of cultural institutions.
