Over the past few months, I’ve had many conversations with utility leaders across the country, and one theme keeps coming up: the grid is changing faster than any of us expected.  I decided to write about what I’m seeing firsthand and where I believe the next decade is headed. In short, we don’t need to reinvent the grid. We need better visibility, better data, and a clear understanding of how today’s changes are reshaping operations.  The utilities that get this right will be the ones setting the pace for the future.  If you're working inside a utility—or partnering with one—I think you’ll recognize much of what I describe.  I would love to hear your perspectives.

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a $1.6-billion loan guarantee for projects by American Electric Power Co Inc (AEP) to upgrade nearly 5,000 miles of transmission lines across five states. The projects cover Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. "The upgrades supported by this financing will replace existing transmission lines in existing rights-of-way with new lines capable of carrying more energy", AEP said in a press release. #powergrid

Industrial communication and digital technologies are transforming the way utilities modernize substations, enabling the development of new-generation protection, control, and automation systems. From September 23 to 25, EPRI members - ATC, BPA, Con Edison, Consumers Energy, CPS Energy, Dominion Energy, Duke Energy, Entergy, LCRA, PPL, TVA, and Southern Company - convened at FirstEnergy’s Center for Advanced Energy Technology (CAET) in Akron, OH, for the 2025 EPRI Digital Substation Workshop. Over the course of this event, utility SMEs from P&C/IT/CIP gained insights into the latest research from EPRI projects, engaged in cross-functional discussion to foster the needed collaborations in digital substation development, and shared firsthand experiences of IEC 61850 implementations through presentations and interactive dialogue. Attendees also toured FirstEnergy’s cutting-edge digital substation research laboratories and professional training facilities at CAET (brochure link - https://lnkd.in/erBuBJyb). It was great to be back on #CNBC to talk about one of the most underutilized levers in today’s energy landscape: energy efficiency.   A few highlights from our conversation:  ➡️ Energy expansion is outpacing the energy transition.  There is hunger and thirst for more energy, and customers, from data centers to LNG operators, are asking: Where will the power come from? ➡️ Efficiency can put up to 10% power back on the grid - supporting the energy expansion. With technologies available today, customers can unlock grid capacity without waiting for new lines, substations, or generation. ➡️ AI is accelerating the urgency for more stable, resilient grids.  Our work with utilities, including projects like VoltaGrid in Texas, shows how digitalization and electrification can strengthen reliability even as loads rise. ➡️ The economics are compelling.  With energy prices climbing, saving 20–30% directly strengthens the bottom line and can fund future investments.   ➡️ Our local-for-local strategy gives us an edge  85% of ABB Motion products sold in the U.S. are made in the U.S. This means reliable support, resilience against tariffs, and continued investment - like our recent $100M LV & MV drives facility to power data center which serve the cooling industry in addition to many other in the US. ➡️ Policy will evolve, but technology keeps moving  Our responsibility is to deliver solutions that are good for the planet and good for our customer’s wallet.
