Source Athletes & Assets™ The autonomous driving company has been steadily embedding itself inside sports culture by partnering with athletes as trusted distribution nodes rather than relying purely on traditional paid media. Around the Super Bowl and NBA All-Star Weekend, that strategy accelerated. Instagram feeds were filled with athlete-led Waymo integrations. The cleanest example was the collaboration with Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams, whose nickname happens to be Waymo. The activation felt native to his audience rather than inserted. This did not begin in February. Waymo has layered partnerships across multiple leagues and levels over time. Golden State Warriors. Golden State Valkyries . jared mccain. Moses Moody. Tristan Thompson. Juju Watkins. Fernando Mendoza. The pattern is deliberate. Three signals stand out. First, multi-league exposure. National Football League (NFL) , National Basketball Association (NBA) , WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) , and college athletes. That diversifies reach and mitigates reliance on a single demographic. Second, geographic alignment. Many partnerships overlap with Waymo’s active markets in California and Arizona. That is strategic trust building where product adoption matters most. Third, event timing. The ramp during the Super Bowl and All-Star Weekend shows an understanding of when athlete content generates peak amplification. The real question is what comes next. Do these evolve into longer-term ambassador structures. Does equity enter the conversation. Does this become a repeatable athlete-powered acquisition channel rather than seasonal awareness. When brands consistently return to athletes for distribution, athletes transition from media line items to infrastructure. If Waymo stays committed, this is not a campaign. We all feel a little FOMO about using generative AI to create new value, save time, and generally 'innovate' A recent deep dive by Sports Business Journal offered some insights and examples about how sports organizations are experimenting, scoping, and utilizing generative AI (link in comments). It's partly identifying otherwise manual and labor-intensive processes that generative and agentic AI can streamline, and partly straight imagination and experimentation - The low-hanging fruit is querying masses of real-time and stored data to create personalized content, offers, and ads. And identify actionable insights and optimizations - There's also mass time savings in repeatable, new variable-informed processes (the team ops scheduling and logistics example is just that) Of course, teams have been using forms of AI for years — creative production, chatbots, data analysis. We're at a fun time where it pays to brainstorm, no bad ideas (mostly), and to understand novelty, problem solving, surprise and delight, uber-personalization, and new forms of fan engagement and partner activation and tracking.
