In 2025, retailer brands hit record sales and outgrow big brands. Shoppers want good value and good quality, and retailers now offer premium and functional options too. Where it’s already mainstream: -United States. Retailer brands grew +3.7% vs +1.1% for national brands. Sales are close to $280B , a record. For many shoppers, own brands are the default. -United Kingdom. Own-label share stayed near parity with brands (about 47–52%). Premium private label is growing fast. -Western Europe. In several countries, private label is over 40% of category sales. It’s part of the regular basket. Where it’s growing up: -Asia–Pacific. 54% of consumers say they now buy private label more often (leaders: Thailand, India, China, Indonesia). People see it as “good enough quality at a fair price.” -Latin America. Share is lower than in Europe, but growth is faster than the global market. Big room to grow, especially for discounters and club formats. Where it’s still early: Middle East & Africa. In many countries, share is still under 2%, but momentum is building as modern retail expands and shoppers seek affordability. Why this is happening: -Value without trade-offs. Most shoppers see private label as “good value for money” and a real alternative to brands. The stigma is fading. -Retailer strategy. Big chains launch premium lines (chef-inspired, plant-based, “made without”). Own brands are about innovation, not just low price. -Promo reality. Brands overuse discounts. Retailers push their own labels smartly, earning margin and loyalty, so private label keeps its share. What manufacturers should do (5 quick moves): 1) Rebuild the portfolio for profitable volume. A lot of the conversation right now is about Walmart hitting a $1T market cap. What’s more interesting to me isn’t the number itself. It’s what it takes to operate at that level without breaking. At this scale, success isn’t driven by a few great products or big bets. It’s driven by process and efficiency. Clear expectations. Repeatable execution. Systems that work for both buyers and the vendors operating inside them. From the buyer side, efficiency matters. Fewer surprises. Programs that run clean. From the vendor side, the bar is high but clear. If you perform consistently, the system works. If you don’t, scale exposes the gaps quickly. That dynamic is hard to build and even harder to maintain. But when it works, it compounds quietly over time. A $1T valuation isn’t about hype. It’s the market saying this operating model still holds at massive scale. Congrats to the Walmart team members and supplier community. Despite tariffs and ongoing pressure, many are doing well, others are still grinding through real challenges. Hopefully some of that value creation continues to reach everyone doing the work. Apple is the only consumer electronics company with the operational right to allocate scarce capacity like 3nm chips, advanced packaging, and high-end memory. Not because it pays the most, but because it absorbs failure risk at the system level. Suppliers don’t fear Apple’s orders; they fear volatility, spec changes, and early cancellations. Apple bears those risks internally, allowing it exclusive access to the bottlenecks that define the high-end ecosystem. The market consistently misreads Apple as “slow” because capital works in quarters, while Apple operates in system convergence cycles spanning 3–5 years. Short-term metrics like EPS or YoY growth are noise. Immediate monetization is never the goal; attempting it would destabilize the hardware-software-ecosystem continuum. This is why Apple’s hardware innovation will always lag capital expectations as physics enforces serial processes: -Architecture validation -Process matching -Yield ramp -System verification Money can accelerate nothing here; only structural patience pays off. Premium consumer electronics are no longer mere products, which have become quasi-infrastructure. Sony and TCL have announced plans for a joint venture. (Details are still emerging, and the final structure remains uncertain.) https://lnkd.in/dNTYbEPH On the surface, it looks like a familiar story: Japanese technology and brand strength combined with Chinese manufacturing scale. An interesting question, at least in the European market, is whether it can earn attractive margins once EU data and supply-chain regulations are fully enforced. The answer may lie less in sales potential and more in how a joint structure interacts with Europe’s evolving regulatory environment. The EU is moving from regulation as compliance toward regulation that shapes data flows, supply-chain responsibility, and accountability across corporate boundaries. Under such conditions, joint ventures can face challenges that standalone firms do not—particularly around data governance, responsibility allocation, and internal control. In addition, EU environmental and supply-chain regulations may, in some cases, increase structural complexity rather than deliver the synergies a JV is designed to achieve, potentially putting such arrangements at a disadvantage from a regulatory-response perspective. Ultimately, the key question will be how effectively the regulatory-response structure can be simplified.
