Staffing Ratios Aren’t Enough Without Enough Staff California has mandated nurse-to-patient ratios — yet staffing challenges persist. What can we learn from both coasts? California’s staffing ratios set clear expectations for nurse assignments (e.g., 1 nurse to 5 med/surg patients), and research links these ratios to: ✔️ Lower mortality ✔️ Fewer medication errors ✔️ Better recovery outcomes …but only when the workforce exists to fill those slots. The NYC strike notice reminds us that tracking safe ratios on paper isn’t enough without enough nurses to staff them. 📍 Example — Unfilled ratios: A trauma unit partnered with a school reported that even with mandated ratios, they were frequently staffed below ratio because nurses weren’t available — leading to forced overtime and safety concerns. 📍 Example — Travel nurses dependence: One hospital filled gaps with travel nurses. While helpful short-term, this created inconsistent teams and slowed communication — especially on complex cases. The staffing policy is important. But the workforce capacity and support systems are what make it real. When care teams are stretched thicker than ratios allow, the safety cushion disappears. I appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the recent Forbes Business Council piece on AI in sales. It reinforces something I’ve seen over decades of building and scaling relationships across healthcare, tech, and capital. Here’s the thing: AI is an exceptional guide. It helps us see patterns faster, sharpen insights, surface opportunities, and bring discipline to how we show up. It strengthens analytics, content, outreach, and follow-through. But it should never be the driver. Sales still moves on trust. On judgment. On the quiet credibility built over time when someone knows you understand their world, their risks, and their goals. No algorithm replaces the moment when a relationship shifts from transactional to trusted. The future belongs to leaders who use AI to inform decisions while keeping relationships at the center. Technology can point the way. People still close the gap. That balance is where real, durable growth happens.
