Transparency only matters when it changes the math. Everyone loves to claim “transparency,” but very few are willing to show their work. Horizon did. By opening its ad-tech RFP process to clients, the agency has taken a step most holding companies never will: showing how partners are evaluated, not just who made the list. That matters more than we think. In a supply chain where 40% of programmatic dollars evaporate before reaching a consumer, seeing the logic behind tech selection is not un-important. It is governance. Most of the waste in our stacks didn’t get there through malice. It arrived through inertia: legacy tools, unknown vendors, forgotten subscriptions. Congratulations Ram Mohan and team on the launch of the Coalition on Digital Impact (CODI)! An important step towards a more inclusive Internet — where everyone can access and engage with digital spaces in their own language. Launched on #UADay2025 in Washington, DC, CODI brings together leading organisations like Identity Digital Inc., Unicode Consortium, Internet Society, Indigenous Connectivity Institute, and many more. Its mission: to break down language and technology barriers that exclude millions from digital participation. #CODI will focus on: ⭐ Researching how language affects Internet access ⭐ Monitoring Universal Acceptance of domain names and scripts ⭐ Promoting multilingual digital tools, resources, and education ⭐ Advocating for inclusive Internet policy and infrastructure ✴️ Why it matters: Of the 7,000+ languages spoken globally, fewer than 100 are fully digitised. Only about 10 dominate the Internet. 95% of languages are not represented online. And every two weeks, one language disappears — taking with it a unique worldview, cultural identity, and generations of knowledge. Language is a matter of access, equity and safety. In emergencies, elections or health crises, when information isn’t available in someone’s native language, lives are at risk. And while regulations like the European Accessibility Act (#EAA) are pushing companies to ensure digital access for all, at the end - true accessibility starts with language. This is a topic I care deeply about. I worked for 13 years in localisation and had the honour of serving on the board of Translation Commons during the UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019. Together with engineers from Google, we launched digitisation standards for Indigenous languages. One of our proudest moments was welcoming the Chief of the Cherokee Nation to the Mountain View office, where he was received as a head of state.
