Not so super Frank C. seems to never get the facts straight. Let''s take the time to review his latest 'drivel' 🧱 FACT CHECK: Setting the Record Straight on “5G Broadcast vs ATSC 3.0” 1️⃣ “5G Broadcast is advancing globally while ATSC 3.0 struggles.” ❌False. ATSC 3.0 is deployed in more countries and more receiver types than 5G Broadcast. Fact: ATSC 3.0 is on-air across the U.S., South Korea, Jamaica, and Brazil (TV 3.0), with additional trials in Canada, India, Mexico, and multiple European markets. Meanwhile, there are no nationwide 5G Broadcast deployments anywhere—only isolated MNO pilots in Germany, Austria, and China. 2️⃣ “ATSC 3.0 can’t be received on phones.” ❌Completely outdated. Fact: ATSC 3.0 reception is active on feature phones, smartphones, tablets, USB-C dongles, gateways, and TVs from multiple vendors. The ecosystem includes Saankhya/Tejas, MediaTek, SiliconDust, and others—commercial hardware, not prototypes. 3️⃣ “5G Broadcast is the only global standard (3GPP).” ❌ Misleading. Fact: ATSC 3.0 is an ITU-recognized international broadcast standard (BT.2037, BT.1877)—same global recognition level as DVB-T2 or ISDB-T. ATSC 3.0 is also natively IP, fully interoperable with 3GPP systems (that’s the foundation of B2X – Broadcast-to-Everything). 4️⃣ “Release 18 feMBMS is a game-changer.” ❌Hardly. Fact: Release 18 adds incremental improvements—larger guard intervals, extended SFN support, and optional return path—but it remains dependent on operator spectrum and core integration. ATSC 3.0 already exceeds feMBMS throughput, spectral efficiency, and modulation flexibility, operating independently in broadcast bands and enabling one-to-many delivery without network load. 5️⃣ “Brazil will also implement 5G Broadcast to complement TV 3.0.” ❌ Blatantly false. Fact: Brazil’s SBTVD Forum explicitly rejected 5G Broadcast for terrestrial TV services. TV 3.0 is based on ATSC 3.0 physical layer technology. The separate MNO-led study on mobile use cases is not part of TV 3.0 and has no official adoption. 6️⃣ “India is aligning with 5G Broadcast.” ❌ Misrepresented. Fact: India’s D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) initiative is ATSC 3.0-centric, jointly developed by Prasar Bharati, IIT Kanpur, and Saankhya Labs. Government agencies recognize ATSC 3.0 as the technical basis for large-scale D2M deployment. 7️⃣ “ATSC 3.0 is its own worst enemy.” ❌Wrong again. Fact: ATSC 3.0 is the only broadcast system proven to deliver UHD, HDR, datacasting, emergency alerts, and IP services at scale—while converging with telecom and satellite systems in real deployments. The global momentum speaks for itself—ATSC 3.0 is the broadcast foundation for the connected world. 🔧 Bottom Line feMBMS is a network feature. ATSC 3.0 is a full system. ATSC 3.0 delivers broadcast-grade performance today—independent, interoperable, and global. The world isn’t “swimming against the current.” It’s following the current—and that current flows through ATSC 3.0.

Does #MXL replace SMPTE ST 2110? NO!! During one IABM Technology & Trends Roadmap working group calls, it was clear that many of us kept hearing incorrectly that MXL (Media eXchange Layer) is a replacement for ST 2110.  While at the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) event this week in New York, I asked Felix Poulin from CBC/Radio-Canada and Vincent Trussart from Grass Valley to help clear this up. A brief history of TV audio: from mono to stereo, then digital TV with compressed data and wider bandwidth. Digital audio supports up to 5.1 channels but requires bit rate reduction. Lossy codecs discard inaudible information using masking curves. Dolby Digital frames consist of 1,536 audio samples. Next-generation audio (NGA) supports immersive, personalized audio and enhanced dialogue. Adopted by ATSC 3.0, DVB, ISDB, cable, satellite, and TV 3.0 in Brazil. ATSC (B2X) Multicast Broadcast Neutral-Host O-RAN System Architecture First paper to be published IBC 2025 https://lnkd.in/eRyCBMza ABSTRACT ATSC 3.0 is the most advanced digital broadcast standard. This paper introduces Broadcast-to-Everything (B2X), a new physical layer Radio Access Network (RAN) standard being developed by ATSC. B2X enables multiple users to share multiple radio frequency (RF) carriers in various IMT and broadcast bands (ranging from 5 MHz to 50 MHz). B2X is optimized for battery-powered devices. B2X builds on ATSC 3.0's Layer 1 (L1) and Layer 2 (L2) protocols where applicable and includes new L1/L2 control signalling. It operates within a Neutral-Host shared Open RAN (O-RAN) system, supporting a variety of services such as wearables, IoT, and Smart City applications with flexible Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) sizes of 128, 256, 512, and 1024. To ensure reliable and scalable performance, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) is used, breaking the physical layer into Physical Resource Blocks (PRBs), each containing 24 subcarriers spaced 3 kHz apart. A scheduler allocates PRBs based on service needs, with Virtual Bandwidth Parts (VBP) assigned to each application. B2X is designed for efficient multicast and broadcast with carrier aggregation to increase capacity. It enhances mobile performance using intelligent Single Frequency Network (SFN) topologies, allowing content delivery over a wide-area SFN or cloud-based edge networks. For 5G/6G interworking and traffic offloading, B2X uses the O-RAN F1 interface to encapsulate the 5G/6G-PDCP (Packet Data Convergence Protocol) layer 2. The data is transmitted via B2X baseband over O-RAN fronthaul to SFN transmitter sites for emission. Dual-connected user equipment (UE/UBE (User Broadcast Equipment)) retrieves and passes the PDCP layer 2 to the 5G/6G UE PDCP buffer, completing the offload process.

When LUTs Introduce Artifacts, the Damage is Permanent Currently we are preparing the IBC demo with our UHD camera setup showcasing IRIS.BROADCAST. While configuring the live pipeline, we noticed some interesting and subtle video quality behavior—especially around noise handling. LUTs are essential tools to transform camera signals into proper broadcast formats. However, they are nonlinear transforms that reshape the video signal. When applied to footage with inherent noise, a LUT can dramatically alter the statistical structure of that noise. In our testing, we observed how certain LUTs transform noise into structured distortion. High-frequency noise energy is shifted into lower frequencies, where it becomes visible as artifacts. What was once random noise now is image content. It’s important to note that this artifacting behavior is not caused by LUTs alone. Camera settings such as saturation, contrast, and even sharpness adjustments can similarly emphasize noise and contribute to these irreversible distortions. Once these transformations happen, there’s no going back. These artifacts become baked into the signal and persist through compression, transmission, and final output. No amount of denoising or reprocessing can restore what’s lost. This is a critical consideration in any broadcast or post-production workflow. A LUT or camera setting doesn’t just change the look—it changes the signal.
