Want to know the best way to plan an AI rollout in a school district? Bring everyone to the table. Today the Santa Clara Unified School District AI Advisory Committee did exactly that — teachers, vice principals, students, and classified staff all in the room together. The result? A much clearer picture of how to actually implement AI tools in a way that works for real people. Here's what we walked away with: - Start with the right people, not all the people at once - Match the tool to the level — elementary, middle, high school, and business ops each have different needs - Don't rush it. Pace matters more than speed - Most importantly — lead with WHY before you ever talk tools That last one? It changes everything. 📊 Strong Results with FOSS in LA Unified School District (LAUSD) From 2022–2025, FOSS schools scored 5 percentage points higher on average in “meets and exceeds” on the Grade 5 California Science Test (CAST) compared to LAUSD overall. In 2025 alone, FOSS schools outperformed non-FOSS LAUSD schools by nearly 7%. LAUSD has adopted two science programs—FOSS and Amplify. Results shown are based on public assessment data.

Honored to be part of this critical conversation on scaling AI thoughtfully across higher education. The CSU’s partnership with OpenAI is not just about deploying ChatGPT—it’s about addressing an epistemic, indeed seismic, shift that is forcing us to rethink not just how students produce answers, but how we teach them to question, reason, and create knowledge in partnership with intelligent systems. I am grateful to Sophie White, Jenay Robert, and the EDUCAUSE team for creating a space to explore these critical topics. LAUSD HR and CSULA have partnered through the Computer Science Supplementary Authorization Grant to strengthen existing computer science (CS) courses and expand offerings. This grant will prepare and credential 60 additional CS teachers, enabling the district to reduce enrollment disparities for female students, students of color, and English learners, while expanding equitable access to high-quality CS opportunities across schools. In downtown San Francisco, Western Governors University's Tech Impactors Network is addressing a critical workforce challenge: How do we tap into the full potential of California's talent pool? With 1.9 million tech jobs across the state, there is an enormous opportunity for skilled professionals. Stories like Pablo Vigil's show what happens when education meets accessibility and determination. Pablo went from working graveyard shifts as a security guard to thriving in WGU's IT program—all while juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet. His journey from skeptical TikTok discovery to rising tech talent shows the transformation that happens when higher education becomes flexible and affordable.
