Home Depot kept access to its internal systems open for more than a year, to anyone who knew where to look, experts have warned. Security researcher Ben Zimmermann recently found a published GitHub access token which belonged to a Home Depot employee. The token was exposed, most likely by mistake, in early 2024, and granted access to “hundreds of private Home Depot source code repositories” hosted on GitHub. Zimmermann said the token allowed him to modify the contents of those repositories. https://lnkd.in/guANK6vb

Apparently, “extraordinary” can be invisible if it happens inside Amazon. I met with a Principal Engineer this week who’s driving software modernization for 80,000+ developers. Her automation framework has saved thousands of developer-years and reshaped how one of the most famous tech companies in the world maintains its codebase. And yet, on paper, USCIS might still say: “Impressive, but only inside your company.” That’s the tricky part about EB-1A. You can lead globally significant work, but if it’s all internal, it may not meet the “sustained acclaim” test. For this engineer, we mapped out a plan to bring her impact outside the walls: Start judging for IEEE or AI/DevOps conferences Publish technical articles in industry venues like IEEE Speak at public developer events. Because when your work is world-class, the world should know it.
