That’s the crux of the primary vs. secondary data debate. 🎤 Primary data is like doing your own podcast interview—you ask the questions, control the flow, and tailor it to your topic. Whether it's through interviews, focus groups, or surveys, you're in the driver’s seat. 🗂️ Secondary data, on the other hand, is like binge-listening someone else’s series. It’s rich, already edited, but not designed with your specific research questions in mind. Think public reports, archived interviews, or published datasets. Why mid-market Data Science teams can’t keep up Mid-market companies don’t have a data problem. They have a decision throughput problem. We see this pattern over and over again: • 2–10 data scientists • A backlog measured in months, not weeks • Teams stuck in analytics firefighting • Execs asking “what would happen if…?” • Answers arriving too late to matter The bottleneck isn’t talent or tools. It’s that Data Science has become the choke point for every important decision. Here’s why it breaks down: 1. Data Science capacity is scarce - Every new initiative competes for the same few people. - Most DS time gets burned on ad-hoc analysis, one-off models, and stakeholder explanations. 2. Time-to-impact is too slow - By the time an analysis is done, the decision window has passed. - Accuracy improves. Business outcomes don’t. 3. Talent retention is fragile - When decision logic lives in notebooks and individuals, the organisation is one resignation away from losing critical knowledge. 4. Executives need causal answers, not forecasts - “Will revenue go up?” isn’t the question. - “What happens if we change pricing, promos, or capacity?” is. Most teams can’t answer that fast enough. The uncomfortable truth: 👉 Hiring more data scientists doesn’t fix this. 👉 Better dashboards don’t fix this. 👉 More advanced ML doesn’t fix this. The constraint is decision velocity. The teams that break through don’t try to make Data Science faster. They make decision-making scalable, by turning bespoke analysis into repeatable, decision-grade systems that more people can use. I once spent 45 minutes copy-pasting schema definitions into a prompt. Column names, data types, table relationships - manually transcribed every session. The model reasoned well. But I was the integration layer. That's the ceiling you hit when you stay in the chat interface. The API is where it lifts. Five things that actually change when you go under the hood: → SYSTEM PROMPTS Not a fancy first message. A persistent instruction layer that shapes model behavior across an entire session — separate from user input. → TOOL USE You define functions. The model decides when to call them. This is the bridge between "Claude answers questions" and "Claude takes actions in your system." → WORKFLOWS vs AGENTS Workflows are fixed sequences — predictable, auditable. Agents decide their own execution path. Different capabilities, very different risk profiles. Start with workflows. → PROMPT CACHING Mark a large system prompt or schema for caching. Subsequent calls skip re-processing. Build this in from the start — retrofitting it is painful. → STREAMING Tokens arrive as generated. In production this changes latency profile, timeout handling, and how you route partial responses to users. The deeper shift: you stop thinking about Claude as a product and start thinking about it as infrastructure you design around. Directional insight beats perfect data. In theory, attribution should give us 100% accuracy. In practice, that rarely happens. What works better? Knowing which 2-3 signals matter most and acting on them quickly. I stopped chasing perfect tracking for all 50 channels. Instead, I doubled down on 3 that actually moved revenue.
