I truly believe that for physical stores to stay relevant, we have to trade traditional shelf space for "test zones" and social areas that invite exploration. It's about feeding that natural human curiosity with "awe-inspiring" formats that a screen simply can't replicate. In a market where every purchase is being more carefully considered, are we still just designing shops, or are we finally starting to design experiences?

The news of Saks Global's bankruptcy filing is a wake-up call for the retail industry. Just over a year ago, they acquired Neiman Marcus in a deal worth approximately $2.7 billion, hoping to create a new luxury department store giant. However, the debt burden from the highly leveraged acquisition quickly plunged the company into a liquidity crisis. ([NJBIZ][1]) For me, this has three lessons: 1️⃣ Scale does not equal competitiveness. Mergers and acquisitions can expand size, but if the profit model doesn't improve, the risks are actually greater. 2️⃣ Cash flow is always more important than the story. ven luxury retail brands cannot ignore cash flow and supply chain stability. 3️⃣ The retail industry is being reshaped. Online competition, direct-sales branding, and changing consumer preferences are all challenging the traditional department store model. Often, the strategy itself is not wrong. In 2026, consistency beats novelty — especially when scaling SKUs. 2️⃣ Seasonless textile planning Brands are quietly moving toward fabrics that work across multiple drops and climates — reducing dead stock and improving reorder speed. 3️⃣ Lower MOQ flexibility (without quality drift) The demand isn’t “cheap small runs.” It’s controlled testing → clean scale-up without surprises in hand-feel, shrinkage, or finish. 4️⃣ Traceability that actually helps decision-making Not certificates for marketing decks — but real clarity on yarn behavior, dye impact, and finishing choices that affect long-term customer satisfaction. 5️⃣ Fewer suppliers. Post 5/10. Over-production is hard to fathom and harder to fix. Over-consumption gets more airtime, documentation and critique, yet the antidote is the upstream supply chain. Fashion’s system for high margin sourcing is a legacy which fails to protect market viability from volatility. Excess inventory overwhelms an industry in lost capital, landfill waste, and lasting damage to brand image. In plain terms, fashion makes 10 to sell 3, discounting and discarding 7. Obsession with volume leads nowhere, as investors know. The singular alternative to such poor economics is to make 7 and sell 7. Is a “ten fingers” example too glib or does simplicity reveal a better reality? A bad system has twisted incentives. Buyers love low unit costs, and suppliers love to fill capacity, so how does 30% less volume change the inertia of over-production? The answer, in three parts, applies in all geographies. First, lost capital is the result of unsold goods, unneeded inventory and high forecast error. These metrics are sky high. Second, the most misrepresented measure in fashion is lost sales (stockouts). Low-cost goods with long lead times miss market trends, in season upside, and full price sales (Prof Warren H. Hausman and I researched stockouts at 50% of markdowns, analysis for another time). And third, investor views of shareholder value reward performance based on capital generated with far less inventory risk. Revenue and margin are limited measures of ROI; it is the denominator that drives exponential results. Fortunately, AI decision-making is migrating upstream, as new business models rise to supersede the old. Fashion need not dwell in financial mediocrity but can reinvent itself by taming materialism and inefficiency toward more productive livelihoods.
