Why you should use Expo for any React Native development When you hear "developer experience," you might think better docs or a faster dev server. But for Expo, DX has meant building an entire ecosystem—one that’s quietly helped scale React Native far beyond early adopters. Two examples: 1. Snack – a browser-based playground for prototyping and sharing React Native code, no install needed. 2. EAS – managed CI/CD for mobile, taking the pain out of building, signing, and deploying iOS/Android apps. This relentless focus on DX is why Expo has become the default starting point for so many mobile devs today. It’s a reminder: DX isn't just a nice-to-have. It’s a serious growth lever. "Make it easy to do the right thing, and hard to do the wrong thing." This principle is the key takeaway from a fantastic Shopify Engineering article about how they scale their platform. Instead of just hoping developers follow architectural rules, they built tools that automatically reject code that breaks them. It's a lesson that goes far beyond software architecture. Imma ruffle some feathers with this one, I think. I have a custom project where I can't use react/your-fav-js-framework (bc reasons). Don't sleep on native browser capabilities.

Incredibly proud of our team for this effort! Shopify POS is now running with React Native’s New Architecture. ✨ Working on migrations at this scale is not an easy task. Our team had to solve really complex issues along the way - it’s perhaps one of the most technically challenging efforts I’ve helped with in my career. I had to leverage *all* the mobile expertise I’ve acquired over the last decade to solve issues across every layer of our application. I even got fixes merged into react-native itself! With thousands of retail stores depending on Shopify POS every day, we knew this migration had to be seamless — and I’m proud to say the rollout was extremely smooth. Thiago Magalhães shared some of the lessons learned along the way in the linked article for anyone planning a similar migration!
