Cadence Acquires AI Chip Verification Startup ChipStack Semiconductor software giant Cadence Design Systems is acquiring ChipStack, a Seattle startup that built AI agents to automate chip verification—one of the slowest, most labor-intensive parts of chip design. The entire 20-person team joins Cadence, which claims the deal will strengthen its AI-driven verification capabilities. ChipStack emerged from Seattle's AI2 Incubator in 2023 and raised over $7 million from Khosla Ventures, Cerberus Capital, and others. The company says its AI-powered tools accelerate verification by 70%, addressing a major bottleneck in semiconductor development. Cadence and ChipStack had already been working together on integrations before the acquisition. Financial terms weren't disclosed, but a spokesperson confirmed investors saw strong returns. The startup's backers include AI2 Incubator, Khosla Ventures, Cerberus Capital Management, Clear Ventures, and angel investors. Why This Matters Chip verification typically consumes enormous engineering time—teams must ensure designs work correctly before manufacturing, which can take months. Automating this with AI doesn't just save time; it potentially shortens development cycles for everything from smartphones to data center processors. ChipStack was founded by Kartik Hegde (PhD from University of Illinois, internships at Meta and NVIDIA) and Hamid Shojaei (formerly at Lightmatter, Google, Qualcomm). Hegde wrote on LinkedIn that joining Cadence offers "the best way to take our product to a wider audience, while expanding the feature set even faster." Jacob Colker, managing director at AI2 Incubator, called the founders "elite AI talent" building "agentic AI that solves one of chip design's biggest bottlenecks." Left Qualcomm, no customers for two years, built an 11,800 CR company. 1. After completing his master's and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, Avneesh Agrawal joined Qualcomm. He led the semiconductor and mobile communications space there for a decade and got the big news. 👇🏻 2. He became the President of Qualcomm India and South Asia. Over four years, he was granted over 200 US patents for his work. During this time, he noticed something. 🤔 3. India faced 4,64,674 road accidents and 1.5 lakh people lost their lives. He believed that computer vision and AI could change driver safety by making roads safer through real-time intelligence. After 15 years, He left his top job. ✅ 4. He started a company with his colleague, Julian, to solve the road safety problem in Bangalore. In August 2015, Netradyne was born. 🚀 5. The idea was simple ⏩ Build a camera-first, vision-driven fleet safety solution with on-device (edge) AI. The flagship product - Driver. i, a rugged multi-lens dashcam that analysed 100% of drive time to identify risky and positive driving behaviours. He thought he had it, but he did not. 👇🏻 6. Low latency for in-cab coaching, building training data pipelines was a challenge. Moreover, convincing fleet operators to try a camera that watched drivers was another. He had to find answers or else Netradyne would not lift off. 🤔 7. He focused on anonymised analytics and Driver training programs to ensure in-cab positive reinforcement for good driving. Moreover, he split the team between the US and India to speed model training and hardware design. By 2016, it raised 108 CR led by Reliance. 💰 8. On 24th March 2017, Netradyne finally had its first commercial customer. It worked with Load One to make their drivers the safest and best-trained drivers on the road. And then customers kept coming - Stewart Transport, General Motors and Bryan Truck Line. By 2018, it raised 148 CR from Microsoft and Reliance. 💸 9. With funds, Avneesh focused on dynamic 3D/HD mapping and packaged underwriting data for insurance companies. By 2021, it had grown to support over 1000 fleets, including Titan Freight Systems and Ace Endico and crossed 1 billion driving miles. In 2021, it raised 1120 CR from Softbank. 📈 10. As it launched Driver.i one, a professional-grade video telematics device in 2023 and scaled to 18 billion minutes with 3000 customers across US, Canada, Mexico, Germany, UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, the big moment came on 16th January 2025.👇🏻 11. Netradyne raised 778 CR led by Point 72 Ventures at a valuation of 8328 CR. It became the first Indian unicorn of 2025. 🦄 11. #Altera, Spun Off From #Intel Earlier This Year, Reportedly Cutting Nearly 100 #Jobs According to San Francisco Chronicle, #Altera—the programmable #chipmaker recently spun off from #Intel—plans to cut about 82 jobs at its San Jose headquarters, based on a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (#WARN) filed with the state of California. The job cuts at #Altera were announced last week and are set to take effect in October, according to state filings, as reported by #KRON4. As PeopleMatters notes, citing sources, the layoffs come as part of the company’s transition under new ownership. However, Tom’s Hardware notes that the timing of these changes at Altera coincides with a period of significant turbulence for Intel, which has laid off tens of thousands of employees in recent quarters. As the San Francisco Chronicle highlights, Altera’s layoffs come on the heels of hundreds of recent job cuts by Intel across the Bay Area and the rest of California. #Intel is cutting about 24,000 jobs this year—reducing its workforce by roughly one-quarter, according to a report from The Verge last month. Earlier this year, #Altera was spun off as an independent company. As #PeopleMatters notes, Intel retains a 49% stake after selling a 51% majority share to private equity firm Silver Lake in a deal valued at USD 8.75 billion, which is expected to close later this year. When Intel acquired Altera in 2015 for USD 16.7 billion—its largest takeover at the time—it saw the FPGA maker as a key opportunity to diversify its revenue streams and bolster its position in the data center market, as Tom’s Hardware states. However, the tech giant has struggled to grow Altera’s business.
