A week can look productive on the surface, yet still lack any real coherence. Constantly moving between maker/manager mode is exhausting, but more importantly, it breaks momentum. What’s old is new. Funny to watch VCs flood back to out-of-favor business models—hardware-enabled software, marketplaces, consumer tech—which are now viewed as more defensible because AI can't easily replicate physical infrastructure, network effects, or brand.

Don't Build a Better Wheat Farm" - Why Defensibility Stakes Are Higher in Deep Tech Just published a new piece on my "Ignore the Confusion" blog, building on thoughtful insights from Eric Ver Ploeg at Tunitas Ventures about startup defensibility. Eric's core thesis: Too many startups pitch like wheat farmers - "huge TAM, slow incumbents, growing market, domain expertise" - but fail to think through long-term defensibility until it's too late. From a deep tech perspective, the stakes are even higher: ** Unlike software, deep tech founders must commit to defensibility strategies from day one - their funding depends on it ** Patent vs. trade secret decisions are often difficult to reverse and shape your entire competitive strategy ** Even "picks and shovels" providers (the tools that make industries more efficient) become commodities without proper moats The key insight that resonates: Defensibility can't be retrofitted. Whether you're building software or deep tech, your moat must be architected into the business model from the start. Hello Package Blazing New Trail With Tech Startup Hub The heart of the innovation corridor of Atlanta, Georgia is where Brown and White Ventures portfolio company Hello Package will introduce itself to an entire new wing of the package industry. CEO Paul Favorov announced Hello Package will install its cutting edge system into the Atlanta Tech Village, the 4th largest tech space in the U.S. where a community of innovation has flourished  deep connections to Atlanta’s business and investment community. The Tech Village, launched by serial entrepreneur David Cummings in 2013, is 103,000 square feet of coworking and incubator space with hundreds engaged. Atlanta Tech Village has created more than 10,000 jobs. Its mission: to be the nerve center of Atlanta's effort to crack into the nation's tech startup top-five. For Hello Package, it's the crossing of a new threshold for its package delivery system: entry into commercial installation. "We love working with trailblazers," Favorov said. "Atlanta Tech Village is exactly that." The agreement broadens Hello Package's reach beyond its focal markets of dormitories and multifamily properties.Favorov believes his company's news partner is a perfect fit. "Because delivery chaos is not just a multifamily problem," Favorov said.

i don't think most people have priced in the fact that codegen is now trivial. the bottlenecks are shifting upstream -- why build, what to build -- and, importantly for us, downstream -- whether what's built holds up in the real world. no software will ever be perfect. bugs happen in production. new corner cases uncovered. reality wins. so the differentiator going forward is designing systems that expect failure, then learn from it. when something breaks, it should be detected, root-caused, and fixed -- fast. and the system should remember the issue so that it's more resilient in the future. anti-fragility will be the new baseline.
