🌲The 2025 Tree Cover Loss data is released, and it shows both encouraging progress and growing risks. ❗ New findings from the Global Land Analysis & Discovery laboratory at the University of Maryland (UMD GLAD), presented by the World Resources Institute’s Global Forest Watch, reveal that tropical primary rainforest loss dropped by 36% in 2025. However, global forest loss remains high as wildfires continue to intensify in North America and Europe. In 2025 alone, fires accounted for 42% of the 25.5 million hectares of tree cover loss globally. While progress is being made in other regions, rising wildfires pose a growing challenge to global efforts to reduce tree cover loss. Strengthening forest resilience and addressing fire risks will be essential to sustaining progress.
