Summary: Always staying at the forefront of biologics! My career has afforded me opportunities to participate in the amazing decades of rapid growth and evolution of biological therapeutics. From monoclonal antibody to cell and gene therapy to mRNA, I have witnessed the industry overcome innate complexities of these products and achieved one medical miracle after another. My career started in R&D and quickly moved to pre-clinical drug development focusing on biomarkers. I was a pioneer in developing biomarker assays for oncology drugs at the time. I expanded expertise to drug release testing and overall QC for biologics, which led me to the world of cGMP. In my 20 yrs of experiences in leading US biotech and global biopharmaceuticals, I held positions of increasing responsibilities as heads of bio-analytical assays, QA, global QC and tech transfer, annual product quality review, CMC quality leader for product launches, and head of quality. Through it all, I remained a thought leader and advocate for new concepts and practices that allow the differentiating features of biologics products to be better realized. I made significant contribution to modern quality systems, phase-appropriate GMP approaches, QbD and control strategy for biologics, post-commercial process and product quality monitoring etc. When personal life took me to China at the start of its biotech industry, 10 years ago, I was a rare returnee/biotech executive with deep CMC and GMP quality experiences. The industry was in a “nascent state” lacking systems, standards, leaders and talents for biologics product development, especially with respect to CMC and quality. I founded the first biologics-only CMC consulting service company in Asia, which later expanded to biologics QC testing. In 2020, a strategic alliance with Charles River Laboratories allowed us to trail-blaze the biologics safety testing sub-sector in the region providing the most comprehensive biosafety testing covering all the latest biologics product platforms, such as CGTs. My firm successfully enabled numerous highly visible “China-first for global” product launches and IND approvals resulting in out-licensing deals to the west. Going forward, I will continue to bring passion, integrity and forward thinking, in addition to my technical and business leadership skills to the biotech industry. As the dynamic global environment demands, my independent opinion and vision, strategic acumen, Eastern-Western culture savviness and on-the-ground adaptability will help any business to maximize the output of investment in innovative medicine.
