- [Instructor] If you've been watching this course from the beginning, you've connected to a network and are ready to send data over it. There are lots of processes that help this happen, including protocols for how the data gets split up into packets and transferred using bits and bytes and ones and zeros. We don't need to understand that right now though. What we do need to understand is how the data you send knows which computer to go to, and how does a receiving computer know the data that's intended for it? Well, for starters, each computer must be uniquely defined on the network and that identification starts with an IP address. An IP address is much like the address assigned to your home. An IP address defines the computer and its location on the network in the same way your house address defines your home's location, street, city, and zip code.
