What is gender?
- I remember when I was first told that there is a difference between using the term woman and the term female. Before that, I used them interchangeably. That eye-opening moment began my journey to understand gender. This is a journey that continues today. Not only is there so much to learn, but also our understanding of gender is evolving. Even people who are experts, like scholars who study gender, are also on this learning journey. Gender is a field that evolves, not only from academic study, but also from our lived experiences as we come to understand what gender means in society. So what I'm sharing with you are some of the foundational concepts that can be found in academic resources. I use a resource of gender research called Gendered Innovations, which was developed by Professor Londa Schiebinger with the support of many others.
