Write it down

Write it down
- The key to avoiding too many verbal tics is preparation and scripting. You may not need or want an actually fully written script. Bullet points may suffice for you, but consciously or unconsciously, we use phrases like "you know" and "like" to kill a few seconds while we put our next thought into emotion. So the more you've made notes about your key points on paper or on screen and you have it right in front of you, the less you'll even need such tactics. If they offer you a confidence monitor at an event, take them up on it. If you're doing phone or Zoom interviews and have your notes right there in front of you, use them. If you know you're going to have to be notes and monitor free, then write it down and rehearse it with or without another person role playing with you. The very act of writing things down helps embed them in your memory. Typing may not be quite the same, but it also helps. So write it down.
