- As a talent developer, before you consider the next big role for your team member, consider this: the role that team member is currently in might be their greatest growth opportunity. Developing current capabilities is a smart, cost-effective way to help people grow within their existing roles, making the most of what they already do. Now remember, there's a difference between a skill and a capability. A skill is a mastered behavior, and a capability is the ability to do something that has not yet been mastered. You know, I've seen throughout my career a lot of talent wasted and a lot of money wasted, and the reason is because people only see folks doing a skill that might be related to a job description, but not necessarily what they're capable of doing beyond the job description.
