Developing a security metrics inventory
Imagine stepping into a role where you're responsible for the security metrics program. You inherit several dashboards that all claim to show how you're doing, but none of them clearly tells you what is being measured or how it ties back to your responsibilities. That's where a metrics inventory comes in. A metrics inventory is a single list of metrics that explains what each one measures, why it exists, who uses it, and where the data comes from. Without an inventory, teams build dashboards and reports in isolation. And the same metric ends up defined differently from one place to another. That leads to duplicated metrics, unclear definitions, and numbers that are hard to reconcile or trust.
