- Think of your workflow like a tree. When you regularly prune and cut the dead branches, you make a healthier tree. Don't worry, I'm not about to discuss how to be an arborist, but I am going to talk about how to simplify and remove waste in your business processes. There are a number of lean methodologies that you can use to streamline your processes. We're going to take a look at the 8 Waste as a tool to highlight and eliminate inefficiencies in a process. What is waste? Waste is anything in the process that does not add value to the customer. I use the mnemonic DOWNTIME to remember the 8 Waste. Let's break it down. D is for defects. Defects occur when you end up producing something that doesn't meet customer expectations or standards. Think about baking a batch of cookies and half them come out burnt.
