- Lean thinking has caused a major shift in corporate cultures all across the business world. Initiated by Toyota many years ago, it first became the Toyota production system and then expanded across the entire enterprise. Lean involves specific tools and methods and the discipline to implement them into every process and activity. Lean systems focus on four basic principles that fit well with factory objectives and tactics. First and foremost is to eliminate waste throughout every process. The goal is to remove all unnecessary activities so that you are only doing what is needed to get the job done. Create value with zero waste. This includes reducing factory inventory to the lowest feasible level and decreasing material movement by designing an efficient factory layout. The second principle of lean is to increase speed.
