Developing stronger self-awareness
So much of good decision-making and problem-solving is about your own self-awareness. Are you aware of what emotions are triggered by different situations or events? Do you know when your negativity bias has hijacked things, or indeed, your nervous system? Your nervous system is very powerful and creates that involuntary physical response to stresses and perceived threats. So knowing how to calm and ground yourself is key. The most accessible way to do that is to slow down your breathing. Since our nervous system is often alerted most of the time, it's a good idea to do this as often as you can. There are two things in particular you can do to help strengthen self-awareness. This is the practice first introduced to me by Julia Cameron, who wrote The Artist's Way. She advocates committing to a time period where, upon waking, you simply write for three pages. There's no thinking involved, just writing until you've filled the three pages.
