Use visual aids effectively

- When most people think of visual aids, they often think of a PowerPoint presentation or poster pad. Those can work, but props are a more effective way to help people see what you are saying. My favorite example of this is Carrie Carter. Carrie was participating in a pitch competition called "The Dolphin Tank", a kinder, gentler version of the TV show "Shark Tank". As a judge, I had an opportunity to review her business plan in advance. She had created a hook to put in your car to hang your purse on. I thought, "really?! You're building a business around a hook that holds a purse?" Carrie was so smart though. Instead of just telling us about her idea, she carted a full-size passenger car seat to the front of the ballroom, set it on the floor, put a purse on it, wrapped her fingers around an imaginary steering wheel, and started driving while asking, "have you ever been driving along, had to stop all of a sudden, your purse fell onto the floor and you're scrambling around, trying to…
