From the course: Operations Management Foundations

What is operations management?

- You might not know it, you might not believe it, but you are already an operations manager. So what exactly does that mean? It means that you're always looking for ways to get more out of your own life. Everything you do during your day, making meals, getting ready for work, creating a spreadsheet, cleaning things, fixing things, exercising, these actions and activities all fall into the category of operations. You see, operations management is the management of the systems that produce products and services. In other words, it's the management of how we get things done, the management of how we make products like dinner for your family, the management of producing services like cleaning the kitchen after dinner. At home operations managers like you, you find ways to do these things better, faster, and with fewer resources. Now, imagine having the power to do this at work. Whether you work for a company that provides products, services, or both, they'd love to see you improve your operations management skills. By understanding operations, you'll better understand how to manage all the moving parts in an organization. Inventory, manufacturing processes, waiting lines. You'll better understand how to effectively manage projects, how to control and improve quality, and in the process, how to satisfy customers and improve employee productivity. Look, being good at operations is like turning on a turbo engine inside your company because saving time, money and getting consistent, positive results means that we have more time to get other things done. It means we have more money for other endeavors, and it means that everything we make is valuable to others and ourselves. As you can see, understanding the fundamentals of operations might just be the key to getting the most out of your company and maybe the most out of your life.
