- To set up platforms for success, it is critical to define and staff the right roles and responsibilities. Let me share some unique platform roles in an R&D organization. First, there's the API product manager. The API product manager is responsible for driving the vision, strategy, prioritization and roadmap. Think of the API PM as the hub of the wheel, bringing together cross-functional partners and stakeholders and them taking the full psychological responsibility for making the API a success. Second, we have the API designer, who's responsible for designing the API interfaces, including the inputs and outputs of the API. The goal of the API design is to create an easy-to-use API that creates significant value for end users. Third, we have technical writers.
