Identifying possible problems
- Proactive identification of possible sources of conflict helps a cross-functional team leader prevent or even avoid issues before they happen. This requires that the leader sit down to discuss goals, styles, concerns and priorities with each member of the cross-functional team. Armed with that knowledge, the leader can spot possible conflicts and resolve or even prevent them. Start by having a team kick-off meeting. Have everyone cover their preferred style, their goals for the project, and other big priorities or concerns they have. Let people know the topics in advance of the meeting. And have them come prepared to discuss the topics. This discussion will make teammates more aware of what's driving their colleagues performance and decision making. After everyone covers their thoughts, cover your own goals. Your style, your concerns and priorities. Also, call out possible points of conflict. Discuss with the team how you're going to resolve it.
