Story beats: Time to pile it on
- [Instructor] Okay, you've come up with an idea for your screen story, you've held your bucket out in a brainstorm to catch all the brilliant ideas that will find their places on your pages, and you've started to organize them within a mind map, you've come up with a beginning, a middle, and an end, but what about all the stuff in between? It's now time to start the real structuring of your story, to do this, it's helpful to know a couple of bits of screenwriter's jargon. First, we call this process of constructing the major events of your story, breaking, as in, I'm going to sit down and break my story. Ironic, isn't it, that a term that sounds like you're tearing everything down means you're building everything up? It probably comes from the idea of breaking your story into its component parts. So into what exactly are you're breaking your story? We call those units beats, a story beat is an event that advances the plot.…
