Refinement is not an event
- So far, we've talked about Scrum events, sprint, sprint planning, Daily Scrum, sprint review, and sprint retrospective. There's one more event that's not officially in the Scrum framework, but it's often talked about. It's called Product Backlog Refinement. Let's talk about when you should do refinement and why it's not actually in the Scrum framework. In simple terms, refinement is taking a Product Backlog Item or PBI and refining our understanding of what that PBI means, so it can be worked on by a Scrum team in a sprint. The 2020 Scrum guide describes refinement as the act of breaking down and further defining product backlog items into smaller, more precise items. This is an ongoing activity to add details such as description, order and size. Often PBIS are added to the product backlog without enough detail to actually be worked on.
