Using structured writing
We've seen that literal modelling is about creating a narrative that is precise enough to generate code and other artefacts,. But how do you create a good narrative? It takes practice to write with precision and clarity and achieve the right level of abstraction. We find that structured writing is a key skill that helps immensely with this. In fact, structured writing is useful for virtually all business communications. Structured writing has been one of the main influences on technical writing since 1965, when it was invented by Robert E Horn, A psychologist at Columbia University. The aim of structured writing is to present information that can be assimilated by the reader in as efficient and pleasant a way as possible. So this requires that the author does quite a lot of work ordering the information, chunking it up into manageable logical chunks, and making sure that the whole thing flows together so that it is readable.
