- Thinking of a hobby that provides flow can probably come pretty easily. But when was the last time that you found flow in your work? Interestingly, Csikszentmihalyi noted in 1990 that the most pursued leisure activity in the United States at that time, which was television watching, rarely produces flow. And those on the job are about four times as likely to experience flow compared with individuals watching TV. Csikszentmihalyi calls this the paradox of work. While most of us would prefer to spend our time in leisure, and avoid work, we report having some of our most positive experiences at work, while often reporting low moods during our leisure time.
