- When you were a kid, there was probably some way that the people you grew up with operated that you thought was completely universal. And as you got older, you probably had a moment when you learned that this wasn't the truth. For me, it was taking your outside shoes off when you enter a home. I spent most of my childhood in countries where this is the norm, so anytime I went to anyone's house, I took my shoes off at the door. When I moved to the United States, I quickly realized that not everyone takes their shoes off at home. The first time I had a friend come over and waltz right into my living room with their outside shoes on, I thought they were very rude. Years later when I first had a home of my own, I carried on the practice of not wearing shoes in the house.
